Students Population
There are about 3,500 Kenyan students studying in fifty (50) stations throughout India in the year 2002.
Admission Requirements
The minimum admission requirements to any of the Indian Universities for under graduate general degree course are
mean grade of C
five (5) C grade pass
Under-Graduate Courses
Kenyan students are currently undertaking the following undergraduate courses:
Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)
Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)
Bachelor of Law (LL.B)
Bachelor of Science (B.Sc)
Bachelor of Pharmacy
Bachelor of Engineering
Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT)
Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA)
Kenyan students are also undertaking post graduate studies i.e. Masters and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Application For Undergraduate
Students applying for undergraduate degrees must submit their application in February every year.
Students applying for Professional course shown below have to submit their applications to the Mission to be forwarded to the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India through Ministry of External Affairs before 31st July.
Masters of Business Administration (MBA)
Masters of Computer Applications (MCA)
Masters in Tourism Administration (MTA)
Academic year
The academic year for all Indian Universities begins in July.
Duration of Courses
The undergraduate courses take between three (3) to five (5) years.
Master degrees can be completed between one (1) to three (3) years.
It takes a maximum of five (5) years to complete a PhD degree.
Residential Permits
All Kenyan students coming to study in India are expected, within 14 days of arrival, to register/report to the Foreign Registration Office (FRO) in their stations. Residential Permits are renewed annually.
Please note that students who wish to pursue further courses after their first degree will be required to pay another US $ 75 to renew their Residential Permit.
Registration of students
It is a requirement that all Kenyan students studying in India register with the Kenya High Commission in New Delhi.
Consular visits
Officers of the Kenya High Commission may make consular visits to the stations where Kenyan students are based occasionally.
Tuition and Upkeep
The amount of fees paid varies from one University to another and so does the cost of living. Most Universities do charge capitation fee and the amount charged again varies from one University to another.
Partial Bursary
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology operates a partial bursary scheme for needy students. However, the Kenya High Commission in New Delhi has no provision for financial assistance to students studying in India either for upkeep, medical, tuition or otherwise. Students are therefore urged to ensure prior to coming that they will be able sustain themselves financially throughout their stay in India. Students applying for the partial bursary, submit their application between February and June every year. The successful applicants usually receive the partial bursary twice within the financial year.
